New Endowed Fund Honors West Penn Nursing School Alumna
Maria Wyckoff Boyce and Bill Boyce established the Margaret Lesko Boyce Endowed Fund with a transformative $500,000 gift to West Penn Hospital School of Nursing. Named for Bill's mother, a proud alumna and practical nurse, this permanent endowment helps nursing students access essential supplies like stethoscopes, uniforms and laptops — removing financial barriers that can derail their education. By ensuring students have what they need to succeed, the Boyces are investing in the next generation of compassionate nurses who will care for our community.

Inspiring Tomorrow's Healthcare Providers Today
What if every aspiring young doctor had a physician in their corner? Through AHN's Today's Residents Inspiring those Underrepresented in Medicine: Pipeline for the Health Sciences (TRIUMPHS) program, high school students from underrepresented backgrounds are paired with resident mentors who guide them through the path to medical school.
The program is funded by generous donors Terry and Janet Serafini. Since 2019, this partnership between the Internal Medicine Residency Program and Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy has matched 11 students with physician mentors. Two graduates have already entered pre-med programs, including one in an accelerated BS/MD track.

25 Years of Life-Changing Innovation in Neuroscience
After years of debilitating Tourette syndrome that left her bedridden with constant tics, 24-year-old Abigail Bailey (pictured) found hope at AHN. In March 2025, neurosurgeon and AHN Neuroscience Institute Chair Dr. Donald Whiting performed deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery that transformed her life, reducing tics from one per second to a few per hour. Now back at work and planning her wedding, Abigail lives with freedom she never expected. Her recovery comes 25 years after Dr. Whiting performed one of North America's first DBS surgeries on 18-year-old Ed Cwalinski, who still thrives today. AHN continues pushing the boundaries of neuroscience.

Removing Barriers to Lifesaving Care
As of January 1, 2026, all Highmark health plan members will receive 100% coverage for diagnostic breast studies and MRIs — no copay, no deductible. Early detection dramatically improves breast cancer survival rates, but cost concerns can prevent patients from getting necessary tests. This policy removes a major financial barrier that often delays crucial follow-up imaging. Combined with AHN's convenient walk-in mammogram services at eight Western Pennsylvania locations, this enhanced coverage creates a powerful safety net for our community.

Radiothon Raises $23,000+ for Children and Families
The 2025 Children's Miracle Network (CMN) Radiothon was held on December 11 at AHN Saint Vincent and live on Happi 927. Presented by Tendto Credit Union, this key fundraising event garnered over $23,000 through the generous contributions of individual donors via the PSECU Phone Bank, online giving and valuable sponsorships. These critical funds will directly benefit the pediatric patients at AHN Saint Vincent, providing essential pediatric healthcare resources for the tiniest patients in the Erie region. We extend our sincere gratitude to all our partners for their instrumental role in this achievement and their commitment to local children's health.
