Art Meets Medicine at AHN Allegheny General Hospital Cancer Institute

Artist Ron Jesiolowski beat prostate cancer after just six treatments thanks to the Elekta Unity MR-LINAC system at the Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Allegheny General Hospital Cancer Institute. The 73-year-old South Fayette resident created "The Angels Within," an oil painting inspired by his treatment experience, depicting angels in vintage nursing uniforms with streaming lights representing the precision radiation beams. He donated the artwork to AHN's radiation oncology department, where it now hangs as a symbol of hope for patients. This is the kind of exceptional patient experience that your support makes possible at AHN.

Donors Help Bring Nature Indoors for AHN Patients

Thanks to the generous support of Bob and Rita Randall, AHN Wexford Hospital has transformed two CT scan rooms to create a more peaceful and tranquil experience for patients. The Randalls' donation funded the installation of forest and camping-themed nature scenes across three walls and a 12-tile ceiling in each room. This distraction method is designed to reduce patient anxiety, manage pain and build trust, potentially decreasing the need for medication. The improved environment will benefit both adult and pediatric patients undergoing CT scans.

WTAE caught up with AHN to explore how a new study could bring hope to cancer patients.

New Blood Test Could Detect Cancer Years Earlier

AHN doctors are hailing a groundbreaking new study as a turning point for cancer detection. The research reveals a blood test capable of identifying cancer in asymptomatic patients up to three and a half years before traditional diagnosis methods. "If we can have a blood test for cancer, then that's going to be the game-changer in terms of early detection, better cures and our ability to track patients," said David L. Bartlett, MD, Chair of AHN Cancer Institute. Groundbreaking discoveries like this blood test are fueled, in part, by generous contributions to the Susan J. and David L. Bartlett, MD Cancer Research Fund.
